SS22 -Copper Coast Cup back for 2022!

This year’s Copper Coast Cup will be a big shift from years past! Due to some scheduling constraints with Road Worlds and existing rounds, this year’s Copper Coast Cup takes place right in the middle of school holidays. We’re working with the council to deliver some community ride programs, and there are some major changes to the Wallaroo Road Race course from last year. Because we expect it to be pretty busy out that way when we’re up there, we recommend booking your accommodation very soon if you haven’t already.

The Wallaroo Road Race will still include the same circuit and finish as last year, however the Start and Event Areas will be very different. Strava map available here (all course details available on round page) Riders will now Sign On at Hopgood Rd (just after the Finish), and each Start will be briefed on Hopgood Rd and ride along Jones Rd to Wallaroo Point Rd where the race will start. The very beginning of the race will be on gravel on Wallaroo Point, and riders will enter the circuit and continue onto Wallaroo Point Rd. This means the first gravel section each category will encounter will be straight with no corners on it, eliminating the first left turn onto gravel from last year.

With the circuit remaining the same, there are still two corners per lap that require some skill to navigate, one from sealed to gravel and one from gravel to gravel. If you want to get some road bike confidence on the rough stuff between now and October, there are plenty of gravel roads in the Adelaide Hills that will test your mettle – our favourites to challenge your skills would be Gully Rd between Greenhill Rd and Rangeview Dr at Piccadilly (either direction), Collins Rd between Lobethal Rd and Greenhill Rd at Ashton (southbound/downhill is much trickier than the other way around) or some of the gravel fire roads in Belair National Park.

Moonta’s Sunday Criterium is a crowd favourite in SA road cycling and this year will see us take on the same tried and true double block criterium loop from recent years. Our schedule will culminate with the fastest grades of the day in the Elite Categories in the early afternoon, and afterwards local kids will be able to take to the closed road criterium course for some open laps after racing has finished. A real celebration of cycling, we’re bringing in some local food trucks inside the crit loop and we’re hopeful the school holidays will mean we pull a crowd of holidaymakers to watch some fast and furious crit action.

Full race details are available on the Round Page for the Copper Coast Cup here.
