Resurrecting the East End Street Race
We are delighted to be running the East End Street Race as Round 7 of the 2021 MetroMap Super Series! We want to bring bike racing back to the people, and get the action-packed spectacle that is criterium racing front and centre in as many minds as possible. Building on the success that was the Trek Night Riders Criterium in January 2020, we can’t wait to see crowds lining the streets and cheering on the riders as they take on the technical course and fast finish.
We’re grateful to both the City of Adelaide, the East End Coordination Group and the business owners in the area for their support of the event bringing some extra vibrancy to the East End in Spring, and thanks to the EECG, winners in the Elite races will go home with some East End vouchers to splash throughout the shops of Rundle St and surrounds.
The course will begin on Rundle Rd towards East Tce, sweep right in front of the East End Market building, before a wide U-turn and a quick left back down Rundle Rd. The fully barriered course will head towards Dequetteville Tce and riders will need to carry as much speed as possible as the road creeps gently upwards before another very wide U-turn and back down the slight hill to run to the finish line.
A total of 940m of fully-visible street crit course will mean that this is going to a technical and unforgiving course where riders will have to fight for position or risk dropping the wheel in front, and every position backward will mean extra energy spent rubber-banding back on to the bunch after each hot dog corner. It’ll be great watching though, with spectators treated to plenty of viewing options all the way around the course or a birds-eye-view of the whole course from the balcony at The Stag!
For a bit of inspiration on a Thursday morning, check out this little clip from 1991 from one of the OG Street Races in full swing.
