We’re Heading Back to the Beautiful Copper Coast!

Rounds 2&3 of the 2021 MetroMap Super Series sees us heading back Wallaroo and Moonta for the fan favourite Copper Coast Cup double header weekend on the 18th and 19th of September! Proudly supported by the Copper Coast Council, this is one of the best weekends of racing you can get here in SA, and as always, we’re very much looking forward to the Yorke Peninsula getaway!

Saturday’s Wallaroo Road Race is an epic - known as one of the best road races in SA, it’s feared and revered in equal measure. Riders will face off on a challenging new course which takes them across the gravel back roads north of Wallaroo where so many races in years prior have been won and lost. An all-new closed road finish will see them battle to the line at North Beach where the spectating will be better than ever, too!

The new course will leave the Wallaroo Holiday park, as is tradition, before a neutral section along the Spencer Highway to Snodgrass Rd. The race will begin in earnest on Snodgrass before riders enter the closed road loop and turn onto the gravel at Point Riley Rd to complete a number of 23km laps before continuing on to the finish. Strava links are available on the Copper Coast Cup info page.

GM of South Australia at Auscycling, Lachie Ambrose “We were pretty nervous about changing the Wallaroo Road race as it is the highlight of so many riders’ racing year. Our primary motivations were to get the race off the highway and provide a safer, traffic free finish. The earlier dirt sectors will really throw some interesting tactical concoctions into the mix and should create some really interesting race outcomes.”

Day two of the Copper Coast Cup is continuing to build on the successes we have seen in recent years. After the positive feedback to adding another block to the Queen Sq crit circuit last year, we’re taking to the same course again which really mixed up the results from the shorter, one block crit of the past. The Moonta criterium course is nestled amongst a mix of delightful country town architecture, great cafes, and a park with luscious shady trees to watch out the days racing. With just enough elevation to get the heart pumping, and some fast corners and spoon drains to string out the bunch, the course favours efficient riders can save their energy to move through the bunch with ease.
